What are the best motorhomes for bikes?

Published: 29th September 2023 Last updated 6 months ago
Bicycle Motorhome

One of the best things about the freedoms associated with motorhoming is that if you have a vehicle capable, you can take your bike or scooter along with you. You can leave your motorhome parked up at basecamp and cycle off to explore. Whether your preferred cycling is rugged terrain or countryside sightseeing or merely ‘village hopping’ (cycling to a nearby village or town to pick up supplies, or perhaps go for a pint), taking your bike along with you is a great way to add extra value into motorhoming holidays.

When you’re in the process of choosing the best motorhome for carrying a bike around with you, there are a couple of important things to consider.

Things to Consider

Storage:
Is your motorhome actually physically able to carry a bike (or bikes) on a trip? If it can carry them in either a garage or on a bike rack fitted to the rear of the vehicle then you’re pretty much set for plenty of pedal adventures. Ensuring that the dimensions (ie. the size and capacity) of the garage are enough to handle the number of bikes you intend to take on trips is very important. Individual specifications for each motorhome you consider buying will give you a clear indication of whether it is suitable.

Incidentally, motorhomes with garages actually offer a lot of storage opportunity for other outdoor gear too, and investing in one is a great way to keep the interior of your vehicle mess and clutter free during trips. No more suitcases or bags all over the place – and certainly no bikes! You can also organise all of the stuff you keep in there so that it is easy to find – tools in a box, etc.

Accessibility:
This goes hand in hand with the type of storage you choose. Are your bikes easily accessible from the garage or from the rack? How simple is it to load and unload them? Some motorhome garages have ramps, sliding elements or particular kinds of accessible door which made getting things in and out that bit easier.

It’s important to consider this part of taking bikes on trips as there are potentially difficulties for you if you are, say, unable to lift or bend. Modern bikes are made from relatively lightweight material, but that doesn’t necessarily mean it is going to be easy for you, personally, to lift one.

What else do motorhome garages offer?

A garage provides you with extra interior space because you can store a lot of items ‘out of the way’ rather than all over the motorhome, and it protects them from the elements (and, as a garage is lockable, possibly also from theft). Some motorhomes even have additional storage facilities (boxes, essentiall) which are accessible from the exterior and slide out to store smaller outdoor items.

For outdoor enthusiasts a garage can be a particular boon as there is finally somewhere to put your surfboard, fishing gear, sports and games equipment and more. Some garages are large enough to handle multiple bicycles, so for families always wanting to head out on two wheels during their holidays, a motorhome with one is ideal.

If you happen not to be a bike enthusiast but have a motorhome with garage, or are intending to buy one, there are multiple uses depending on the size of it. They are, in effect, multi-purpose spaces which can provide additional living space or the opportunity to have a workspace or kids playroom (again, dependent on the size of the garage) or a sheltered area for undertaking dirty on the road tasks like cleaning boots and washing a dog.

It’s worth remembering that a garage is likely to add a bit of weight and length during the production of a motorhome, and certainly some extra weight when it is loaded with your bike or bikes, so this will have an affect on manoeuvrability as well as fuel consumption.
