How Much Do Motorhomes Cost To Run?

Motorhome cost

The financial challenges of the modern world have resulted in the cost of living rising, meaning many don’t have the funds to go on regular flights. This has led to a spike in the sale of new motorhomes caravans and campervans, with these recreational vehicles being a more cost-effective way to get out and enjoy the countryside, while also being a future investment at the very same time.

Yet, this rise in motorhome sales has caused many to wonder ‘how much a motorhome costs to run’, with prices fluctuating greatly from one model to the next. With our latest exemplary motorhomes from the likes of Adria, Auto-Trail, Bailey, Coachman, Elddis, Roller-Team and Swift, at Spinney, we have everything you need to transform how you like to holiday. Contact us now to start your open-road adventure.

How much does a motorhome cost to maintain?

Once you’ve bought your motorhome and are regularly using it throughout the year, you can expect to pay a few thousand annually to make sure that it maintains its quality. Several factors contribute to the total cost of a motorhome, including:

  • Fuel costs.
  • Insurance.
  • Potential repairs.
  • Servicing costs.
  • Road fund licence.
  • MOT.

These factors range in cost, with an MOT, which costs a maximum of £58.60, differing greatly from annual motorhome tax, (also known as a road fund licence) which can range anywhere from £165-£362.

The cost of insurance will be highly dependent on your record and the quality of the vehicle, with this often costing an average of around £200-£500 per year, though it can easily be more.

So, how much do motorhomes cost to run annually?

As we’ve discussed, the annual cost of a motorhome can depend on various factors. The amount you actually use your motorhome on a yearly basis will greatly affect this cost, as too will your insurance package.

But, all in all, you can expect to pay approximately anywhere between £2000-£8000 per year thanks largely to the insurance, fuel and potential repair costs, though this depends immensely on usage.

What are the most expensive factors about owning a motorhome?

While one motorhome owner might pay just £1100 per year on their vehicle and the next might have to shell out £2500, the same factors often affect the size of the bill.

  • Fuel: The price of petrol and diesel has risen significantly in recent years thanks to several political and economic factors. Most motorhome brands opt to work with diesel engines thanks to the improved torque that they provide – depending on your vehicle’s fuel capacity, refilling your tank can cost anywhere between £100-£200 – if not more.
  • Insurance: Covering theft, repairs and more depending on the package you opt for (just like car insurance), it’s a legal requirement to have insurance for your motorhome. Depending on the type of motorhome cover, it will cost you anywhere in the range of approximately £200-£500 per year.
  • Road fund licence: As we’ve previously discussed, the cost of an annual road fund licence costs anywhere between £165-£362, yet you could end up paying even more. If you have a motorhome with a ‘list price’ of over £40,000, you’ll be required to pay an extra £410 for five years. It’s important to check the list price of a motorhome with a dealership before you purchase, as this way, you can gauge how much tax you will pay.
  • Repair and servicing costs:  It’s a good idea to carry out a full service on your motorhome every year. Depending on the service centre you opt for, this usually costs around £200-£250. A service is not the same as an MOT, however, with the latter carrying the potential for further expensive repairs to take place.

How much does it cost to buy a motorhome?

The world of motorhomes (as well as caravans and campervans for that matter) is broad and diverse, with a range of different brands that offer both affordable and premium options. There is, as a result, no definitive answer to ‘how much does it cost to buy a motorhome’, with factors such as brand, layout and number of berth options each playing into the total price.

At Spinney, we strive to ensure a range of affordable motorhomes for our customer base. This can be seen in the economical Voyager range from Swift which can cost upwards of £60,000, to the luxurious Adria Matrix Supreme collection, which can be purchased for north of £90,000.

For an even more affordable option, our range of second-hand motorhomes is also exemplary, offering vehicles from the same quality brands with a 12-month warranty guarantee.

Motorhome finance

While you might want to enjoy all the benefits of a motorhome right away, we realise that buying a vehicle (whether used or new) isn’t always within your budget. That’s why we offer motorhome finance. Our finance packages allow you to spread payments over 10 years at an interest rate of just 5.9% APR.

Helping you get the best possible deal to maximise your investment, we also offer a  ‘try before you buy’ motorhome service.
