The motorhome lifestyle may often be about travel and adventure – the allure of hitting the open road, the freedom to explore exciting new landscapes and the sheer human joy of embracing the spontaneity of the journey. But, just like everything else in life, motorhome travel is also about making sure you comply with the law, or at the least with the specific rules and regulations of the places you visit. There are certain things to think about while you are out and about on the road, particularly concerning where one can park (and park for the night), especially in the UK.
Parking in laybys around the UK
Laybys are convenient roadside stopping points, and they often present themselves as potential overnight motorhome parking stops for travellers. However, being aware of the legalities of overnight stays in these layby locations is important.
It’s essential to understand that the rules around overnight parking in a motorhome, campervan or caravan can vary depending on where you are in the country. While there might not be a blanket ban on parking up and sleeping in laybys, there are often restrictions and guidelines in place to ensure your safety and the safety of others, to protect environmental conservation and to show respect for local communities.
Many laybys have signs which explicitly state whether overnight parking is prohibited (or, indeed, allowed). Some areas of the country might have specific restrictions regarding laybys during certain times of the year or under particular circumstances. These may include things such as road maintenance or seasonal environmental concerns. Ignoring these signs and parking against their instruction could lead to fines or, in the worst case scenario, having your motorhome towed away.
Highway Code and Council rules
Although you may not have looked at it since your driving test, it is also essential to be aware of the Highway Code. This provides excellent guidelines for safe and responsible driving on UK roads and, while it doesn’t explicitly address the issue of parking for the night in laybys, it does emphasise the importance of not causing obstructions or dangers to other road users. If you happen to park in a layby in a manner that obstructs traffic flow or poses a risk to other drivers, it is inconsiderate and, more importantly, potentially dangerous and illegal.
Some local councils may have their own series of regulations around overnight parking and may designate specific areas or facilities for motorhome users to park. In areas controlled by forward-thinking councils these sites might include amenities such as waste disposal and water facilities. Other councils may have very strict prohibitions which do not allow overnight stays in laybys.
The safety issue
The issue of safety is always crucial to consider. While laybys seem as if they’re convenient places you can simply park up and rest, undisturbed, they don’t always offer the peace of mind required for a decent night’s sleep. Laybys in remote locations are vulnerable and may pose risks to your safety, including theft or vandalism.
Despite all of these considerations, some travellers find that overnighting in a layby suits their needs, especially for short stops if they are on long journeys. Ultimately, it’s technically possible to stay overnight in a layby in the UK but it’s absolutely essential to approach such situations with respect for the environment and local communities, and in absolute adherence to the law or local rules and regulations.
For those who don’t want to take the risk of parking up and staying overnight in a layby, there are more reliable options all over the country. Many campsites cater specifically to motorhomes, offering useful amenities such as electric hook-up, shower and toilet facilities and perhaps even a laundry. These are often safer and more comfortable for an overnight stay, though you will almost certainly have to pay a fee.
Sitting down for a while before setting off and looking in detail at your route should reveal myriad possibilities at convenient points on a motorhome trip.
