VW Campervans: Why Are VW Campers So Popular?
Published: 24th September 2022 Last updated 3 months ago
There’s nothing cooler than a VW camper – but you don’t just have to be a hipster headed to the beach to surf the wave of kudos attached to owning one.
This pop culture icon is as perfect for families as it is for the fashionable because it’s a quality vehicle providing everything you need to love your leisure time as well as being a major talking point (or the perfect prop for your Insta).
Why are VW campers so popular? It’s easy to explain. Time spent in one, whether it’s a loveable old ‘Splittie’ or a more contemporary model, can truly free up the spirit. These convenient classics can be driven on a car licence and provide an almost artisan vibe to the whole motorhoming lifestyle. Each van somehow carries its own quirk, feeling unique and far removed from the conformity of the production line. But in truth the VW camper has its roots in efficiency, and it’s the perfect combination of both form and function.
VW campers are a real reflection of their origins. German efficiency and engineering excellence combined with design smarts in the late 1940s, and an enduring range of quality vehicles was born. In the 70 years since then, over 13 million have been built. That’s a lot of road miles, and a lot of fun!
Why do I need a campervan?
These days, the demand for motorhomes is higher than ever!
Maybe it’s a post-pandemic thing, as people have recognised the value of the staycation – driving up and down the UK in search of beauty spots and brilliant adventures. There are plenty – we live in a beautiful part of the world. Seeing these places from the comfort of a motorhome is a modest and easily achievable dream. Imagine parking up next to a Scottish loch, a Yorkshire dale or a Devon beach and spending some time there without losing the comforts and conveniences of home… Okay, so those will be a little bit downsized as you’re in a van and not a semi-detached, but we prefer to say that they’re ‘streamlined’!
You could also go abroad, of course – but no matter how far afield, this sense of wanting to travel after a couple of years of constraints on our natural urge to move around is not surprising. It has led to a burgeoning demand for motorhomes, which is currently a bit of a problem. Would you believe there’s a shortage? Due to the increased demand and the effects of the pandemic on general production there’s a shortfall on these vehicles coming down the line.
Where there’s a problem, though, we can offer a solution… It’s very simple: the motorhome you buy doesn’t have to be brand new. It isn’t just new that guarantees great quality.
Are VW campervans worth the money?
Actually, yes they are. VWs keep a high proportion of their value, as they’re rightly considered to be classics. When you are spending your hard-earned money on a campervan, buying new or used is going to be a good investment. When you’re thinking about buying a VW campervan, you could easily opt for one of the used conversions we have in stock at Spinney, and still get an impressive amount of resale value alongside your joy.
But it’s not all about the money. Though they’re cheaper and retain good resale value, buying used is a smart move because our vans are all ‘up to scratch’ as they say. You’d be getting something that feels like new, but at a lower price – and you don’t ever have to worry about the conversion itself. No one is going to do a lash-up job as VW owners are a proud and meticulous bunch who like to make sure their vehicles are ‘just right’ when they’re making these conversions.
Despite the ‘used’ tag you’d still be getting a great campervan because the ones we have in stock are brand new conversions which have also gone through a meticulous full habitation and mechanical service at one of our NCC Approved Service Centres.
When you buy a VW campervan you’re certainly buying into the brand and all the enduring associations, but you’re also getting a quality vehicle that is going to perform as well as provide a home. That’s whether it’s new, or one of the used ones on offer from Spinney.
