Top Places to Visit in Your Motorhome in 2023

Flintshire castle

Once you’ve bought your new motorhomecampervan or caravan (or, at least, a vehicle that’s new to you) then you’re not going to want to just park up and take your holidays on your drive. You’re going to need somewhere to travel to, and it’d be even better if it was somewhere you could really enjoy.

Here, in this edition of our blog, we’ve selected our top places in the UK which will provide you with either a fantastic view or something interesting to park up and do. There are three branches of Spinneymotorhomes Cheshiremotorhomes Staffordshire and motorhomes Flintshire, and so we’ve geared our list around those sites. Ready? Okay, let’s go…

Motorhomes Cheshire

Jodrell Bank

One of the most impressive places you can visit in Cheshire is this observatory comprising several radio telescopes researching space, including the world-famous Lovell telescope. Visitors to Jodrell Bank, a UNESCO World Heritage site, can explore interactive displays, projections and artefacts – plus a planetarium show – and journey through the heights of the Space Race to today’s world-leading discoveries. You can also listen to the sound of a black hole, and see live signals received by the Lovell. It’s a great place to immerse yourself in science for a day – and gain a reminder that the universe is vast.

Quarry Bank

This is a wonderful heritage site at an old cotton mill, with the surrounding eighteenth century village telling the story of the industrial past of the north and those who worked it – and how the Industrial Revolution changed the world. You can also explore the life of the Greg family, who owned the mill, through their house and gardens. With lots to see and much to do, including a shop with gifts woven on the heritage looms in the mill, and places to eat, Quarry bank offers a great day out.

Chester

Originally a Roman fort town, Chester has plenty of history to offer those who like to dig in and discover the past by visiting sites of interest. There is also a fantastic museum – the Grosvener – where you can explore the history of Chester, its art and silver heritage, and its natural history. The Period House features rooms from the 17th century through to the 1920s. Chester itself features lots of shops and great places to eat or stop for a drink. If you’re into walking in the footsteps of the famous, notable people born in Chester include actor Daniel Craig (James Bond himself), comedian Russ Abbot and former England footballers Danny Murphy and Michael Owen.

Trentham Monkey Forest

The debate about animals out of their natural environment is going to rage for all of time, no doubt – but Trentham Monkey Forest offers an experience as close to the wild as possible for the primates in its care. Here, in the heart of Staffordshire, you can walk freely amongst 140 free-ranging Barbary macaque monkeys. There are ‘experiences’ available, too, which allow you to feed the monkeys and get behind-the-scenes access. This is a very charming attraction to visit, entertaining and educational in equal measure.

Stoke-on-Trent

Ever wondered why Stoke City Football Club is nicknamed the Potters? Of course you have! It’s because the city is closely associated with the pottery industry. The city has plenty of ways you can investigate its history, including the Potteries Museum & Art Gallery which displays local ceramics, decorative arts – and a WWII Spitfire! If you want to do the ‘famous person trail’, then you’re definitely going to encounter sites relevant to the personal histories of rocker Lemmy and roller Slash, Guns ‘n’ Roses guitarist, who were born here. Possibly, though, Stoke’s most famous son is song-and-dance-man-with-depth Robbie Williams, who has had 13 number one albums. Sites of interest for RW trailers will include the Red Lion in Burslem (where his Dad was landlord) and St Margaret Ward Catholic School in Tunstall.

Motorhomes Flintshire

Rhyl

This seaside town on the north-east coast of Wales has picturesque views and plenty to keep families occupied, including Rhyl Children’s Village and the SeaQuarium. This aqua-attraction features marine species from around the world on show in different zones, plus an amazing outdoor Seal Cove where you can observe harbour seals and get a fantastic underwater view of them in a 330,000-litre pool. For those who like going on the trail of the famous or even the quite well known, Countdown number maestro turned glamour-puss Carol Vorderman went to school here, and Lisa Scott-Lee from Steps was born in Rhyl, as was the last woman to be hanged in England – Ruth Ellis. But don’t let any of those put you off – it’s a lovely spot!

Flint Castle

More history for you, here, at the first castle to be founded as part Edward I’s campaign against Llywelyn ap Gruffydd (Llywelyn the Last) in north Wales, in the 13th-century. Flint Castle boasts a unique and unusually sophisticated design and is essentially a castle within a castle. Flint Castle is also famous as the location of a fateful 1399 meeting between Richard II and his rival to the crown Henry Bolingbroke (who later became Henry IV). This event is immortalised in Shakespeare’s play Richard II. The Flint Castle ruins are very picturesque (great for your Insta) so well worth a visit.

Llangollen Aqueduct

Already impressive, Thomas Telford’s world heritage marvel of engineering can be experienced in a unique way. Dubbed ‘paddle in the sky’, it’s possible to canoe over this 38 metres (126 ft) tall structure above the River Dee, after a tranquil and picturesque journey down the Llangollen Canal. The Pontcysyllte aqueduct is perfect for individuals, couples or families which like to share an adventure – the organisers have 2 and 3-seater canoes.

Whether you’ve already bought your motorhome or are looking now and thinking about all of the things you can do once you’ve decided which one you want – and taken happy ownership – we’re sure this blog will provide you with a few ideas to get you started. It’s always a good idea to make sure your first couple of trips are relatively local so that you become accustomed to driving the motorhome and, of course, get used to living in it!
