Why Buying A Used Caravan Is The Best Thing In 2023
Published: 15th February 2023 Last updated 5 months ago
At Spinney we have a proud tradition of offering high quality pre-owned caravans in addition to brand new caravans. It may not have crossed your mind to invest in a used caravan, thinking that your only serious option was to buy ‘box fresh’… But in this edition of our blog we’re going to explain why doing so can be worthwhile.
Why should you buy a used caravan?
Buying a second-hand caravan can be a seriously smart move to make for a variety of reasons. Firstly, from a financial perspective…
- Financial: You are going to find that you get more for your money than if you buy from new. You’ll stretch your budget because used caravans mean you’ll end up with a vehicle carrying all of the features you require, but at a lesser financial cost. The original owner will, in essence, have paid for any ‘cost options’ when the caravan was new – meaning higher spec or better features. You’ll get a caravan which, although not new, is new-to-you – and for many people that will be more than adequate. A used caravan will also retain its value better than a new.
- ‘Run in’: If you buy a pre-owned caravan it’s almost certain to have been ‘run in’ by the previous owner – that is to say, it will have spent a good deal of time out on the road and any niggling little issues sorted out. When caravans are bought from new, it doesn’t necessarily mean that they will be free from problems. Of course, in theory your new caravan should be and is almost certainly going to be. But once in a while a caravan could have things that need to be ironed out in a ‘teething’ period – and the original owner is likely to have done that.
- Condition: You may be worried that a used caravan will have all sorts of cosmetic and condition issues – but the logic of ownership suggests that this kind of purchase is really well looked after. No-one spends that significant a sum to then allow what they’ve bought to rot or degrade to a massive extent – and the previous owner will probably have invested time and money in keeping things ship shape. Okay, so a used caravan is not likely to be in factory condition, but the upkeep on it is likely to have been very good indeed.
- Mod-cons: As we mentioned a moment ago, there’s every possibility that there will be higher spec and better features available for your money when you buy a used caravan than if you opt for a brand new model at equivalent price. These extras could include things like solar panels, hook-up cables, air conditioning and external features such as BBQ points etc. These extras may have already been added by the vehicle’s previous owner as options at the time of purchase, so you will be saving as you won’t have to pay the cost of buying them yourself. In other words, once again, you will get a better vehicle for less money.
