Motorhome Campsites: A Beginner’s Guide to Choosing the Right Site
Published: 9th April 2024 Last updated 1 months ago
Travelling in your motorhome – whether you’re on a short break or a longer holiday – means you have the freedom to explore new destinations at your own pace. That’s a truly exhilarating way to live, but the success of your trip often hinges on whether you’ve selected the right campsite or not. From breathtaking views to enjoy to essential amenities to facilitate day-to-day living, there are several factors which will influence your choice.
1. Location
The first thing to think about when choosing a campsite is its location. Do you prefer somewhere serene and nestled in nature where you can totally wind down, or a lively social site with plenty of activities for all the family to enjoy? By using the internet you’ll be able to visit travel blogs, review websites and, of course, campsite directories which will help you uncover options that match your preferences. A great tip is to look for campsites which offer easy access to off-park enjoyment such as nearby towns, attractions, hiking trails or bodies of water on which you enjoy activities.
2. Amenities
Assess the amenities offered by each campsite you research. Ensure that things meet you’re on the road requirements, and that all of the essential facilities (including electric hook-up, water, sewage disposal etc) are present and correct. It’s more than likely that you’ll be using the internet during your travels, so online connectivity is important. Therefore, you should enquire about Wi-Fi availability on the campsite. Additionally, there are further amenities – laundry facilities, shops and even recreational facilities on the campsite – that will increase convenience and entertainment during your stay.
3. Size and accessibility
Motorhomes are made in various sizes, and so it’s absolutely essential to choose a campsite that can comfortably accommodate yours! There would be nothing worse than turning up at a site only to find they’re not able to allow you in – so check out the size issue in advance to avoid problems. Also, make sure you check on the accessibility of the site, including the ease of manoeuvring your vehicle within it, and navigating through the camp’s roads.
4. Views and privacy
One of the joys of motorhome travel is waking up and being able to look out of the window at the spectacular views right outside your vehicle. This really increases your general feeling of wellbeing and sets you up for the day. When you’re doing your campsite research, look for those which offer scenic vistas – mountains, forests, lakes or even beaches. Don’t forget to consider whether the campsite provides the privacy you may require – some people prefer secluded sites, while others enjoy the sense of camaraderie offered by heavily communal areas.
5. Dog-friendly
If you’re travelling with your dog, ensure that the campsite has pet-friendly policies and the right amenities for you to look after them properly. By that we mean access to designated pet areas, dog walking trails and pet waste disposal stations. Check whether there are any additional fees you have to pay or restrictions you must abide by, related to bringing your dog (or other pets) to the campsite.
6. Security and safety
You should always prioritise safety and security when picking a campsite. Avoid problems by choosing a site that has well-maintained facilities, adequate lighting and even security patrols, especially if you are planning to stay overnight. You should be able to research the campground’s reputation for safety by reading online reviews from fellow travellers.
7. Availability
Popular sites tend to fill up quickly, especially during peak season and traditional holidays. Make your reservations well in advance, if possible, to secure your booking and avoid disappointment. Check the small print! Campsites have reservation policies including booking fees, cancellations and, potentially, restrictions on the length of your stay.
8. Rules
Before selecting a campsite, use the internet to familiarise yourself with any local regulations and permit requirements. Some areas may have very particular rules and regulations around camping, campfires and specific activities such as fishing. Research whether you need to apply for permits or passes to access public land or recreational areas.
Choosing a campsite for your motorhome adventure will involve careful consideration of all of the things we’ve mentioned here. By following these guidelines, you will be able to ensure you have a memorable and enjoyable experience out there on the road!
